The Salvage Squad: A Home Makeover Show with a Difference!

The Salvage Squad is a fun new home interior makeover series packing an important sustainability punch. Each episode features two families who have the opportunity to get a room makeover with a twist - everything must be freecycled, up-cycled, sustainable, second-hand or salvaged!

This series is all about bringing joy back into tired spaces. The Salvage Squad designers, upcycling experts and trusty tradespeople are tasked with the transformation on a budget of €1,000 and just three days to sustainably turn a neglected room into a gorgeous, functional new space. But this isn’t a budget show – it's all about thinking outside the box and putting sustainability to the forefront.

Pat McDonnell Paints – Sustainable Paint Suppliers to The Salvage Squad

Pat McDonnell Paints were delighted to supply paints and painting accessories to team Salvage Squad! For the most sustainable option, we felt that Ralston was the perfect fit!

Ralston uses the latest technology to create paints that are not only high-quality but also friendlier to our environment. This water-based paint range uses premium raw materials derived, where possible from natural sources to minimise the environmental impact of their products. Extending the life cycles of their paint products, and striving to reduce waste, water usage and CO2 emissions are core to their manufacturing principles.

Ralston's biobased range is VOC-free and made from fully renewable, sustainably extracted organic ingredients while maintaining best-in-class paint performance. The BIOseries contains raw materials that can grow back within the lifetime of the paint. These materials are extracted from renewable sources, produced responsibly and don’t negatively impact on the food chain.

House 1: Jane & Jeananne in Cherrywood, Dublin

For the first makeover of the episode, the Dublin-based designer Natasha Rocca Devine helped Cherrywood couple Jane and Jeananne make over their living-dining room area. Over the years, Jane and Jeananne had essentially given over the room to their beloved pooches and as a result, the space felt tired and didn’t reflect the couple’s personality.

To rejuvenate the space, Natasha devised a playful design that she dubbed “the pink palace.” For this, she created a glamourous colour palette comprising soft pinks and bright, eye-catching golds.

She started by priming the walls with Ralston Colourprime in P05410 to ensure a flawless application that would allow this delicate colour to shine through. The Salvage Squad team then applied a topcoat of P05410 in ExtraTex Satin. This colour was also applied on woodwork throughout the room including on the door, bench, and cornicing. Like this colour? House 2: Judy in Clondalkin, Dublin

For the show’s second makeover, Kerry-based designer Aoife Tobin helped Clondalkin-based make-up artist, Judy to transform her cluttered bedroom. A self-avowed hoarder, Judy’s bedroom was over-stuffed and visually cluttered. Designer Aoife’s aim was to make the space feel more relaxed by creating smart storage solutions to ensure that every item had a place.

To give the bedroom a feeling of softness and glamour, Aoife put together a beautiful colour scheme made up of Ralston colours Himba and Whisper.

Given the importance of storage, the built-in wardrobes were a major focus point for this project. To give these a fresh new look, the team primed them with Ralston Aqua All-Primer in Himba and then applied a topcoat of Ralston Aqua Semi-Matt in Himba. This colour beautifully complimented the floral wallpaper which was hung on the front doors.

For the walls, Aoife opted for a soft white shade from Ralston called Whisper. To ensure an attractive finish on the woodchip wallpaper, the team first primed the walls with Ralston Aqua All-Primer in Whisper and then applied a topcoat of Whisper in Ralston ExtraTex Matt.

A stylish but simple crisp white paint in Ralston Aqua Satin was applied to the door and window sills.
