Fifty Shades of Yellow
When it comes to painting interior or exterior areas yellow isn’t always top of mind. At Pat McDonnell Paints we believe that using yellow is like adding a drop of sunshine to an interior or exterior space, adding a brightness and inner glow. However, let’s be honest; yellow can be a tricky colour to choose. Apart from white, it is the colour that most strongly reflects the light. Some shades of yellow will scream on the walls if you don’t choose the right one.
When choosing the right shade of yellow, we recommend you take two things into consideration; the size of the room and the amount of natural light it receives. Bright yellows work well in small rooms that hold little or no natural light while for larger rooms with a lot of natural light you are better off sticking with less exciting shades of yellow. There’s a huge range of bright yellows to paler yellows available in our stores, across leading paint brands. Paler shades of yellow are perfect for nurseries and they pair perfectly with colours such as aqua or mint green. Brighter shades of yellow are ideal for sun porches or kitchens.
Colourtrend’s ‘Penthouse Living’ and ‘Victorianna’ yellow shades shine with optimism and happiness. Why not use ‘Victorianna’ in a breakfast room to start your day with sense of happiness or go with ‘Penthouse Living’ in your new-born’s room to create a delicate feeling of warmth and joy.
Add energy and a playful touch to a bright white kitchen dining space using a burst of Dulux’s ‘Lemon Chiffon 1’.
Farrow and Ball’s ‘Babouche’ is a ming yellow with a little lemon and mustard in it, giving it more dimension. In a guest room that seems a little staid, paint the bed with this yellow shade. Farrow and Ball also has a collection of Yellow Based Neutrals. Try ‘Sting no.8’ or ‘Matchstick 2013’ – shades that have a creamy undertone giving a country feel that is easy to live with.
