Painting Exterior Railings & Gates

“I have old rusty exterior gates and railings that need painting. I painted them them with gloss paint two years ago but as said they are already up for painting again. Can you please give me the heads up on prep & a durable product etc?” Tara, Meath

Hi Tara! We stock Hammerite Smooth Paint which would be the best, most durable paint for outdoor railings and gates. With the products of your choice, I would recommend you take the following steps:

  1. Scrape, sand and dust off all areas for painting.
  2. Apply a coat of Hammerite to railings & gates. You can apply your second coat of Hammerite after 4 hours.
  3. Depending on painting skill level, apply a 2nd coat of Hammerite to all areas again, but sometimes when 2nd coating just  a touch up is sufficient.
  4. Leave gate open overnight to thoroughly harden.

Good luck with your project! If you have any more questions about painting exterior railings and gates, please comment below!
