Painting Old Furniture: The Ultimate Guide

I have some old kitchen chairs that are currently stained with a pine colour. Can I paint these? I was hoping to paint them a strong red colour.
Cora

Hi Cora,

Thank you for your email, yes you can re-paint your chairs no problem . Here are my 3 easy steps on how to give your old chairs a new lease of life:
Step 1. De-Grease your chairs fully with Original Krud Kutter and some Grade 0000 steel wool
Step 2. Apply your primer coat, if the chairs are a laminate finish i would recommend Zinsser B.I.N primer . If they are solid wood i would recommend Zinsser Bulls Eye primer. One coat is enough.
Step 3. When primer is fully dry apply your top-coat, I would recommend any of the following; Dulux Satinwood/ Colortrend Satinwood or Farrow and Ball Eggshell finish. Apply two coats of your top-coat (Depending on colour).

Just make sure Cora that you use a high quality brush, that way you will get a high quality finish. I would always recommend ether a Wooster or Corona Brush.I have included above some images of the work that we recently done in the store here in Centre-point in Cork. These three pieces of furniture cost us no more than €100 from a second hand store, and look how great they look now!
Enjoy !
